Watering Roses in Hot Weather, When, How to, and How Much!

I feel like I’m constantly watering my roses …or perhaps it just seems that way. But they can be hungry flowers! So I’m going to discuss here the best way of watering roses in hot weather.

Hopefully, I can give you some hints and tips based on my rose-growing journey. But lots of these will be the same as watering most plants in hot weather too. Plus you should check my complete rose watering article too.

Here’s my quick roundup answer, then we’ll get into more details…

The best way to water roses in hot weather is to do it early in the morning, or late in the evening. This is because the sun is not as strong then and won’t evaporate the water as quickly. Water them at the base avoiding the leaves. Add mulch at the base to retain water.

Let’s see if I can expand on this and offer some more tips regarding watering roses. The seasoned gardeners among you will already be aware of much of this with your other plants.

But for some, maybe it just provides some reassurance that they don’t need to do something much different for their roses – if at all.

And for the majority of the time, follow my main guide on when to water roses.

Watering roses in hot weather

Like many plants, watering roses during hot weather can be a bit of a tricky business.

On the one hand, you don’t want to let them get too dry …or they’ll start to wilt and their leaves will start to droop.

But on the other hand, you don’t want to water them too much or they’ll start to develop fungal diseases like ‘black spot’, or powdery mildew.

So, what’s the best way of watering roses in hot weather?

Here are a few tips:

Here are my tips for watering roses during the hot summer months.

  • Water early in the morning, or late in the evening. This is because the sun is not as strong then and won’t evaporate the water as quickly.
  • Use a watering can with a rose watering attachment. This will help you get the water right to the roots of the plant where it needs it most.
  • Water at the base of the plant, not from above. Watering from above can cause disease problems because the water splashes up onto the leaves and stems, which can spread diseases, and scorch the leaves.

If you follow these basic watering tips, your roses should stay healthy and happy all summer long!

How much water do roses need in hot weather?

The quantity of water that your roses require will depend on a few different factors, such as the type of rose, the age of the plant, and the size of the pot – if not planted in the soil. And whether or not the plant is getting enough sunlight.

In general, however, you should water your roses deeply and regularly during hot weather. Just not in the heat of the day.

How often should you water roses in hot weather?

I aim for watering my roses early in the morning or late in the evening, to avoid watering during the heat of the day. Again, check my main guide on when to water roses.

During a particularly hot day or heatwave period, I may even water my roses twice a day – once in the morning and once at night – to make sure they’re getting enough hydration.

Just make sure you avoid getting them on the leaves – as you would with most plants – because we all know how leaves can scorch!

More hot weather watering tips

  • Mulch your roses to help retain moisture in the soil and keep roots cooler.
  • You can try using a soaker hose or drip irrigation system to water your roses slowly and deeply.
  • Water at the base of the plant, rather than from above.
  • Avoid getting water on the leaves, as this can cause leaf scorch.

Things to avoid when watering roses in hot weather

Crucially, if you remember anything from this article, it’s to avoid watering your roses in the heat of the day.

Watering them early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler will help reduce evaporation, and help your roses stay hydrated.

Additionally, try to avoid getting water on the leaves as this can cause leaf scorch. Watering at the base of the plant is best.
